Noida International Airport terminal building at Jewar

IndiGo Flight 6E-2278 Touches Down at 8:05 AM, Marking the Beginning of Commercial Operations

Noida International Airport at Jewar, Uttar Pradesh, commenced commercial flight operations on Monday, June 15, 2026, with an IndiGo flight from Lucknow touching down at 8:05 AM IST. The inaugural flight ' 6E-2278 ' departed Lucknow at 7:05 AM and completed the one-hour journey, officially opening what is now India's newest aviation hub and the third airport serving the National Capital Region after Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport and Hindon.

IndiGo, India's largest airline by fleet size and market share, has been designated as the airport's first launch carrier. The airline will gradually connect Noida International Airport with more than 16 cities across India through direct flights, including major metropolitan destinations such as Bengaluru, Hyderabad, and Mumbai, along with regional routes to Amritsar, Chandigarh, Dharamshala, Jaipur, Lucknow, Navi Mumbai, Pantnagar, and Srinagar.

What the Jewar Airport Means for Delhi-NCR's Aviation Capacity

The Noida International Airport, developed by Zurich Airport International AG under a public-private partnership model, was inaugurated on March 28, 2026, following the grant of an aerodrome licence by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) on March 6. The airport has been designed as a world-class aviation hub intended to complement ' and eventually relieve pressure on ' the congested Indira Gandhi International Airport.

In its first phase, the airport features a single runway and a terminal building capable of handling approximately 12 million passengers annually. Subsequent expansion phases will increase capacity to 70 million passengers per year, positioning Jewar as one of Asia's largest airport projects.

The first phase of commercial operations will focus exclusively on domestic routes. International flight services are expected to commence in subsequent phases, with airlines from the Middle East and Southeast Asia already expressing interest in establishing routes to Jewar.

Why This Matters: India's Aviation Boom Continues

India is currently the world's third-largest aviation market by domestic passenger traffic, behind only the United States and China. The country has seen consistent double-digit growth in air travel demand over the past decade, driven by rising disposable incomes, expanding middle-class aspirations, and the government's UDAN (Ude Desh ka Aam Nagrik) regional connectivity scheme.

The opening of Noida International Airport comes at a critical juncture. Delhi's IGI Airport ' which handled over 70 million passengers in 2025 ' has been operating near its design capacity, especially during peak hours. The addition of Jewar provides much-needed redundancy and capacity for the world's most populous metropolitan region.

India Angle: Uttar Pradesh's Aviation Transformation

With the operational launch of Jewar, Uttar Pradesh now joins a select group of Indian states with multiple operational commercial airports. The state already operates airports at Lucknow (Chaudhary Charan Singh International), Varanasi (Lal Bahadur Shastri International), Prayagraj, Gorakhpur, Kanpur, Agra, Bareilly, and Kushinagar. Jewar becomes the ninth operational airport in the state.

The Uttar Pradesh government, led by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, has positioned the Jewar airport as a cornerstone of the state's logistics and industrial development strategy. The airport sits within the Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority (YEIDA) region, which is home to multiple industrial clusters, data centre parks, and a proposed film city. The airport's catchment area includes Noida, Greater Noida, Ghaziabad, and parts of western Uttar Pradesh and eastern Haryana ' a combined population of over 40 million people.

The project has also spurred significant real estate development along the Yamuna Expressway corridor, with residential and commercial property prices in Greater Noida and surrounding areas rising by an estimated 30-40% since the airport project was announced in 2019.

What's Next: Routes, Airlines, and Expansion

Following the inaugural Lucknow-Noida flight, IndiGo will operate the first Noida-Bengaluru service on the same day. The airline plans to scale operations progressively, adding more frequencies and destinations over the coming weeks. Other Indian carriers, including Air India and Akasa Air, have reportedly held discussions with the airport operator about launching services from Jewar.

The airport is also building infrastructure for cargo operations, with a dedicated cargo terminal expected to handle 250,000 tonnes annually in the first phase. DHL and Blue Dart have been mentioned as potential launch cargo partners.

International connectivity is expected to begin in 2027, with airlines such as flydubai, Air Arabia, and Thai AirAsia reportedly evaluating Jewar as a secondary Delhi-NCR access point for their India operations.
